DOLPHIN SWIMMING LEAGUE SEASON 8 KICKS OFF IN LAGOS WITH RECORD 23 SCHOOLS , EXPANDS NATIONAL REACH

The eighth season of the Dolphin Swimming League, Nigeria biggest and most consistent inter-school Swimming championship, opened in spectacular fashion at the weekend at Grange School, Ikeja, Lagos, signalling another big step forward for grassroots Swimming development in the country.

What began as a modest competition with just five schools in 2018 has now grown into a national movement. Season 8 features 23 schools and swimming clubs, hundreds of young swimmers between the ages of 6 and 16, and for the first time ever, teams from Abuja joining the Lagos regulars. It was a colourful, noisy, and emotional opening ceremony filled with cheering parents, excited children in team colours,  and officials who have watched the league grow from an idea into an institution.

For a country still searching for its next generation of Olympics swimmers, the Dolphin League is not longer just a school competition. It is now the heartbeat of junior Swimming in Nigeria.

A colourful opening at Grange School, Ikeja.

The atmosphere at Grange School on Saturday morning told the whole story. By 8 a.m, the pool deck was already packed. Pupils from Grange, Corona, Children’s International School, Greensprings, Atlantic Hall, and 18 other schools had taken their position. Coaches gave last minute instruction. Parents mounted cameras and banners.

The opening ceremony was brief but symbolic. The national anthem was sung, officials were introduced, and the young swimmers marched past in their school kits. The first race the U 8 25m freestyle set the tone for the day. Every heat was fiercely contested but also celebrated, with competition hugging after races regardless of who touched the wall first.

What stood out most was the level of organization. From electronic timing to marshalled warm up sessions, to medical and safety teams on standby, the league looked and felt professional. Many parents who spoke to our correspondent said this was the main reason they keep returning year after year.

This is not just a Swimming competition. It teaches my daughter discipline, time management, and how to handle both winning and losing. The environment is safe, well connected and very motivating for the children. Said Mrs. Funke Adebayo.

WHAT IS THE DOLPHIN SWIMMING LEAGUE?

The Dolphin Swimming League is officially recognised as Nigeria foremost inter school Swimming competition. It is organized by Dynaspro Sports Promotion in collaboration with Advanta Interactive Limited.

The league is full sanctioned by four major bodies

  • Nigeria Aquatics Federation
  • Nigeria Olympic Committee
  • Nigeria school Sport Federation
  • Lagos State Swimming Association

That level of sanctioning is important. It means that times swum at the Dolphin League are officially recognised, young swimmers can be scouted for national junior teams, and the competition adheres to World Aquatics standards.

The league format is unique. Unlike one off championship, the Dolphin League runs as a seasonal league with multiple meets spread across the academy year. Swimmers accumulate points for their schools, personal bests are tracked over time, and consistency is rewarded more than a single lucky race. This is exactly how grassroots leagues work in swimming powerhouses like the USA, Australia and the UK.

From 5 schools in 2018 to 23 schools in 2025/26

When the league started in 2018, it had just five private schools in Lagos. The founder and Coordinator, Oluseyi Oyebode of Dynaspro Sports Promotion, remembers having to beg schools to participate.

We started with five schools because many school owners did not see the value of competitive Swimming at the time. Swimming was seen as just a fun activity, not a sports you could build a career or life skill around, Oyebode recalled in a previous interview.

Seven years later, the narrative has changed completely. Season 8 features 23 schools and clubs, including: Grange School, Corona School, Children’s International School, Greensprings School, Atlantic Hall, St. Saviour's School, Meadow Hall, Lagos Preparatory School, British International School, and for the first time, clubs from Abuja including the Dolphin Swim School Abuja.
